The Diver, 2014, steel, 82in x 13in x 0.75in
Public sculpture for Fluid Essential for Life at Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden and the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, Staten Island. For FLUID, the Diver plunges into the lawn, or into an unknown world. The sculpture of a man diving into the water alludes to a Greek Mythology tale in which one Argonaut, who was affected by the song of the Sirens and, seeing that his comrades were sailing away from the enchanting music, jumped overboard.
Like water, the sculpture is see-through, almost transparent. Only the outline is visible, the body or center of the figure remains absent.
